Is the Apple iPhone Overpriced? - by Chris Simpson

Costing about $500 or $600 (depending on the specific model), the Apple iPhone might seem significantly more expensive than its Plain Jane cellphone counterparts which only cost $100 to $200. But let’s take a closer look at whether it is a fair comparison.

Apple’s products, like Japanese manufacturer Sony, have always commanded a premium in the market.

While it’s easy to say that a similar cellphone might cost significant less, and represent better value for money, is that really the case?

For starters, Apple has emphasized a great deal on the design and ergonomics of its products, as well as the usability of its products.

Witness the Apple Macintosh.
When released in 1984, it signalled a revolution for users everywhere.

Where computers used to be cryptic devices where you needed to learn to type cryptic codes to get it working, the Macintosh brought the Graphical User Interface (or GUI for short) to the forefront.

Fantasy Sports Boom Has Advertisers Salivating

According to the most recent estimates, 15 million people are spending more than $1.5 billion a year on fantasy sports, and advertisers are seeing this as a lucrative way to reach a very important target market. According to a University of Mississippi study most fantasy sports nuts are men, average age 36 who own their own homes. They spend almost 3.8 hours a week managing their fantasy teams.

On the average they spend about $265 a year, and according to the study it is an industry that is growing at  7% to 10% annually.

So that means the companies offering these services -- Yahoo, CBS Sportsline, and others like ESPN and Fox Sports/MSN -- are using their captive audience of fantasy team managers as a lucrative target for advertising revenue. Ad revenues have skyrocketed as this highly targeted market group has solidified.

Traditional banner ads and sponsor buttons are the dominant form of advertising, but some advertisers are getting more creative -- with "platform packages" such as fantasy podcasts, radio shows, and other linked programming. This same audience typically is involved in a range of program viewing and listening across the range of programs offered by the likes of ESPN.

ESPN and others are even moving into cellular and mobile alert services, because fantasy players want real time alerts, injury updates, and news of other relevant happenings in their sport.

Interactive TV services are the next big thing, according to observers, with the subscriber's TV automatically switching between sports events. ESPN's Red Zone, for instance automatically switches the channel to a game when a team gets inside of 10 yards. Marketers hope to leverage this sort of technology into lucrative programming packages and advertising opportunities.
